CDLFC Hot Start Not Enough Against Derby City

Like Saturday’s matchup with Dayton was the first match in a three-game series, Cincinnati hosted Derby City Rovers on Tuesday for the first of their three matches. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, the outcome was not the same and CDLFC ended up dropping the match to visitors Derby City 1-2. For the third straight game CDLFC have outshot their opponents in dramatic fashion, but that did not equate to a favorable scoreline.

Cincinnati Dutch Lions started off fast again with a good opportunity on goal in the first minute of play. Possession and shots kept in CDLFC favor until Sam Sergi finished a rebound from a Boris Rasevic shot in the 9th minute. The goal was Sergi’s second goal in as many games, which makes him the team leader with 2 goals and 1 assist on the season. For the remainder of the first half, CDLFC kept Derby City on their heels as the hosts held a 9-0 shot advantage at halftime.

Shortly after the second half whistle blew, Sergi was through on goal again but was denied by Derby goalkeeper Braeden Luna. Moments later, a long pass from DCR defender Ahmed Osman over the top of the CDLFC back line found Cory Thomas through to goal. Thomas put the shot past de la Paz to equalize in the 53rd minute. The goal against CDLFC marked the first goal against in over 220 minutes. The match stayed even for over 20 minutes until Cory Thomas kept a free kick alive and found a streaking Yudai Tashiro, who placed a shot into the far post netting for the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute. Cincinnati would continue to try to find an equalizer, but none of their eight second-half shots found the back of the net.

Cincinnati was led with Jesse Dingjan’s four shots and Sergi’s three shots. Derby City was an efficient two shots and two goals, Tashiro and Thomas each with a shot and goal. Derby City goalkeeper Luna finished the match with eight saves. CDLFC and Derby square off two more times, Saturday June 16 at Gettler Stadium on the campus of University of Cincinnati and Friday June 30 at Derby City’s home stadium at Woehrle Athletic Complex.

CDLFC will have two straight home games in the next week, Saturday June 3 against St. Louis Lions and Thursday June 8 against Michigan Bucks. Tickets are available online or at the gate (cash or card).
