CDLFC win on Soccer Saturday

After a two-game skid, the Cincinnati Dutch Lions got back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon. A sweltering heat took the toll on a traveling Derby City Rovers who had played a Friday evening match. Two goals from Ryan Melink and another from Jesse Dingjan saw the hosts come away with a 3-0 win at Gettler Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. The match was played in an event with FC Cincinnati, as they hosted Charleston Battery, in which FCC came back to earn a 2-2 draw with the USL leaders.

The first of two goals for Melink came 12 minutes into the match, when Derby City was flagged for offside. A quick pass to Michael Millay who then sent a driven pass over the top of the DCR back line to a running Melink who calmly slotted it past Derby City goalkeeper Chandler Gaunce. For 25 minutes after the opening goal, each team had their share of possession with few attempts at goal. But, in the 42nd minute, Boris Rasevic was able to find Melink on the back post to put CDLFC up 2-0 right before the halftime whistle.

Three changes at halftime for DCR gave some energy to the visitors as they were looking to claw their way back from a two-goal deficit. But, a counterattack from CDLFC had midfielder Jesse Dingjan get caught around the corner flag deep in Derby City’s defense. Dingjan found an inch of space to serve a ball toward the goal, only to end up dropping into the inside netting at the back post. The goal would be credited to Dingjan as Melink was surely the target of the cross that ended up floating into the goal. Derby City’s Gaunce would come up with several big saves in the second half late in the game to prevent CDLFC extending the lead.

Dingjan’s goal gives the midfielder four goals on the season to lead CDLFC. The two goals for Melink moves him into second on the team with three. Millay and Rasevic each tallied their second assist of the season, which ties them with Sam Sergi for most assists on the season (2). Austin Smythe had a team-high five shots in the match. For only the second time this season, CDLFC was able to preserve a shutout with Zeus de la Paz collecting three saves.

Next match for CDLFC is Wednesday June 21, again at home at Northern Kentucky University’s soccer stadium. KW United is coming to town only 10 days after a 2-5 victory in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm. Tickets are available online or at the gate.
