CDLFC Sink Rovers

In the third and final matchup of the season against the Derby City Rovers, the Cincinnati Dutch Lions were able to prevail and win the series 2-1-0. For the second straight win against Derby City, CDLFC were able to put up a 3-0 scoreline. With the win, CDLFC moves to 5-5-0 on the season and 3rd place in the Central Great Lakes Division. Entering the last four matches of the PDL regular season, CDLFC holds a slim 2-point lead on 4th place Dayton Dutch Lions and trails 2nd place Michigan Bucks by 5-points.

Derby City had the chance to strike early in the second minute of the match on a counter that CDLFC goalkeeper Zeus de la Paz snuffed out, the rest of the match was all Dutch Lions. The match turned into a showcase of young Derby City goalkeeper, Brooks Thompson, who saw 16 CDLFC shots while collecting seven saves. Austin Smythe broke the 0-0 scoreline just 11 minutes into the match when Jesse Dingjan found him in the left side of the 18. Smythe calmly put the right-footed shot past Thompson to the back post. For the next 25 minutes, CDLFC tried to penetrate the tight Derby City defense, only to be denied and have Derby City try to breakthrough using quick counterattacks.

A tremendous save from Thompson in the 26th minute led to a corner kick for CDLFC. Jesse Dingjan’s corner fell in the box to Kevin Barajas who unleashed a bouncing shot that forced Thompson into another terrific save off the crossbar, but fell to Jamie Leddy who was able to nod the rebound into the back of the net. The second goal of the match took the wind out of Derby City’s sails for the remainder of the half. Derby City sought to get into the half without any further damage, make some changes at halftime, and come out looking for hope in the second half.

The Dutch Lions wasted no time in the second half to further put Derby City in the hole and completely put the game away. Kevin Barajas found Smythe with a nice through ball and Smythe calmly knocked a shot off the post past Thompson for his second of the game. Not long after Smythe’s brace, CDLFC began subbing to save legs for Monday’s critical matchup against the 3rd and 4th place teams in the Division. More importantly, the storms began to roll into Woehrle Athletic Complex and threatened to halt the match. Fortunately, for both teams, the rain and storms stayed away until the completion of the match.

Peguy Ngatcha led CDLFC in shots with five while Derby City midfielder Yudai Tashiro had two. Shots favored CDLFC 16-6 on the game. Zeus de la Paz collected two saves while getting a third shutout on the season and Thompson finished with seven saves. Smythe’s two goals put him in a three-way tie for second on the team in goals. Ngatcha’s five shots moved him to second on the team for shots on the season, just five shots behind Smythe for the team lead. Dingjan’s assist made it a four-way tie on the team for assists (2), while he also extended his team lead in points to 10.
